struggle continues

time, and much money spent on useless holsters, has at least eliminated and refined my choice and method, of carry. From a small 38 to a full sized 357 was one step . . after a bunch of 38 holsters that is. The problem had become the 38 was easy enough to conceal, but the size of my hands and the arthritis I’m developing made the grip too small for comfort. and if it wasn’t comfortable, I wouldn’t be accurate. so to the 357 WITH 4″ barrel. This is a full size revolver.
Of course, the revolver came about again because of the arthritis, difficult to rack a slide. and if things were particularly stiff on any given day, I might have to switch hands. With a revolver I don’t have to remember different fingers to use to release a safety and I don’t have to struggle with racking a slide.
So how to carry a full size revolver on a big woman’s body. After wasting money on waistband carry holsters discovered the belly band. and over time, that slipped up on its own and is now worn just under the breasts with the gun to the side for cross draw. Most of the belly bands I’ve found have been uncomfortable on skin so the technique as evolved to a skinny black T with a black band and a black gun and then a loose shirt over it. At least for summer. Winter is soooo much easier!

But by the end of the day, even the belly band is uncomfortable and so the search continued towards a shoulder holster design. Had an old leather one for another revolver and it was comfortable in some ways, but had its limitations because of its particular design.

which unfortunately has a 30 day wait period! But looks pretty close to perfect. Should have the first one by Tuesday and will let you all know how it works out! am really looking forward to the second as it is close to what I was imagining as being a “perfect” design!

IMG_0395 (1024x647))These two cast iron pieces came to a total of $10.50 at the local Goodwill. They are not Lodge brand, but they are also not the super thin Chinese stuff. Both are polished castings. As I’ve commented before, without that finish step on the casting, no matter how you season the iron it will never be that non-stock surface for doing eggs, pancakes. My last Lodge brand cast iron griddle had that pebbled finish typical of the modern stuff and the pancakes always stuck. Am looking forward to trying this out this weekend!

Boiled potatoes in it today. Great to not have that heat in the kitchen BUT we do not have native hardwoods here. AZ Cypress is the hardest evergreen we have and while it’s okay for the fireplace insert, using it for cooking you realize how soft the wood is.

Lots of other places have pictures of the stoves being used with the sticks hanging out of the firebox on the supplied rack and talking about pushing them in about every 10 minutes. With the soft woods here, it was every 4 minutes or so AND it was burning faster than it was making room in the firebox. So it was not unusual for the flames to start licking up the outside (see picture) and for bits of burning wood/coal to drop off onto the table.

It took more wood than if it had been oak or elm, but still, not really a lot. and its all pretty small stuff, not what you would use in the heating stove or campfire. It didn’t cook the potatoes faster than the regular stove, but just as fast, so other than having to keep an eye on it and keep shoving wood in, it was no bother.

Probably as dirty as it is because its all soft wood too.

Anyway, dinner is ready. Next time I’ll try making some pulled pork.

Found one of these type of things at our local thrift and since I knew nothing about them, did not buy it. But then started thinking about having an “outdoor kitchen” for canning and other such stuff in the Arizona heat as well as something for when the SHTF time and began researching. This double door design seems to be the most efficient, though it doesn’t include biomass in its burnable materials, although I bet it could be adapted easily enough for it. We’ve got a lot of medium stuff from our fireplace insert gatherings – too big for kindling, not big enough to be of much use in the fireplace – perfect for this.

It could also be easily transported in the camper instead of trundling around propane. DH is still not getting that we might well see a time when things like propane will not be so easy to come by.

It is a heavy unit, not something to slap on your back for a bug out (have a mini rocket stove for that).

If nothing else, all this stuff will just help us ease through our old age when our income is down and prices of everything are just through the roof!
